Currently, I am in the process of gaining a computer science BSc degree at UCW. This course offers plenty of different of skills and knowledge in a wide variety of computing areas, with year 1 consisting of the following modules: Software Development, Networking Infrastructure, Database Design and Web Technologies.
Originally, upon finishing school, my plans were to pursue a career in design and I took up a course in media design. Although in the end it was not for me, the course taught a valuable insight into the aesthetics and processes required when designing a product. However in more recent times my interest has since shifted to the computing industry. During my previous year, I completed a level 3 in cyber security, and am knowledgeable on a variation of common hacking techniques and how to protect oneself against them, especially phishing and social engineering methods.
Additionally, through successfully completing a Cisco coding bootcamp course I took last year, I am capable of understanding basic python code and have the foundations required to improve in the future.
Upon the completion of my computer science degree, I plan to aim my career's direction towards cyber security. However, throughout the course, I aim to better my overall computing ability, with a focus on improving on subjects in which I am not as familiar with, such as networking or software development. Additionally, I strongly believe that a variety of technological experience will assist me when the time comes to make a decision on which role to specialise in, as cyber security can cover an extensive range.
In order to achieve my long-term goals, I also plan to complete a number of certifications regarding cyber security (such as Security+ and CEH certifications) in the coming years. The acquisition of such certifications will enable me to become a subject matter expert in my chosen field, a highly sought after position. Furthermore, when it comes to formal education, I may consider the possibility of doing a masters program to hone my abilities to an even higher level.
Although I spend a significant amount of my time at a desk working with computers, I still believe that it is important to maintain an active and healthy lifestyle. I can often be found in the gym, pursuing that euphoric feeling of improving my weightlifting journey, with an addition of some calisthenics on the side. Similarly, I enjoy going on hikes up the local terrain, as such breaths of fresh air attribute to a boost in concentration levels.
On the flip side, I certainly still maintain an interest in online activities, consuming various forms of media. Although I was more interested in playing video games in my younger days, I still occupy myself with them from time to time. I play a variety of genres, however I typically tend to veer towards competitive titles with fast-paced decision making and active online communities.
